Eurostat reports rising obesity rates in Cyprus and Croatia

New data from Eurostat reveals rising obesity and pre-obesity rates across several European nations in 2025. In Cyprus, the obesity rate for adults aged 18 and over reached 15.5%, up from 13.8% in 2022. When combined with the pre-obese population (those with a BMI between 25 and 30), more than half of Cypriot adults fall into these categories. There is a notable gender gap in Cyprus, with 18.5% of men being obese compared to 12.7% of women.

Croatia reported an adult obesity rate of 16.5%, placing it slightly above the European Union average of 16.3%. Across the EU, 35.4% of adults were classified as pre-obese. Similar to Cyprus, men in the EU were more likely to be affected, with an obesity rate of 17.4% compared to 15.3% for women.

Among EU Member States, Malta recorded the highest obesity rate at 26.6%, followed by Latvia at 24.6% and Finland at 23.2%. Conversely, the lowest rates were observed in Italy (7.0%), Greece (12.8%), and Romania (12.9%).
