Eurovision Song Contest faces boycott controversy over Israel's entry

During the first Eurovision semi‑final, Dutch talk‑show hosts highlighted Israel’s performance, noting its elaborate stage design featuring a large diamond. Music producer Maurice Wijnen described Israel’s past attempts to sway voting and threatened a future boycott if Finland wins, while entertainment experts debated the legitimacy of any boycott.

The Dutch public broadcaster NOS/NTR took over the broadcast rights, prompting criticism from Avro‑Tros and comments about the network’s stance on the boycott. Other countries displayed varied reactions: Spain did not broadcast, Iceland aired without comment, Ireland opted for comedy, Slovenia showed a “Voices of Palestine” segment, and Slovenia’s counterpart aired a parody of Austria.

A poll conducted by RTL Tonight found that 61 % of Dutch respondents supported the Netherlands not participating in the contest, with 39 % favoring a return only if Israel withdrew. The discussion also touched on Moldova’s entry, which some commentators likened to political propaganda, and highlighted Finland’s status as a bookmaker favorite.
