Eurovision updates rules for hosting rights during geopolitical instability

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has updated the Eurovision Song Contest regulations regarding hosting rights. Under the new rules, a winning country may be deemed ineligible to host the following year if it is involved in an armed conflict, a sensitive geopolitical situation, or any circumstance that significantly impacts the security, safety, or stability of the state or its immediate region.

This change separates the act of winning the competition from the automatic right to host it. To ensure safety, the EBU may commission an independent security assessment of the region. If the evaluation determines the situation is too risky, the EBU reserves the right to designate a different country to organize the event.

Eurovision Director Martin Green stated that the modifications aim to provide greater clarity and prioritize the safety of participants, ensuring a secure and welcoming environment while preserving the integrity of the contest.
