Eurowings flight from Rhodes to Düsseldorf triggers emergency response

On October 18, 2026, passengers aboard Eurowings flight EW-9631, traveling from Rhodes, Greece, to Düsseldorf, Germany, reported sudden gastrointestinal symptoms and vomiting. The Airbus A321-200, carrying 215 people, requested priority landing at Düsseldorf Airport to ensure immediate medical assistance.

Upon landing on runway 23L, emergency services, including firefighters and medical teams in protective suits, met the aircraft. Authorities activated a mass-casualty incident protocol (MANV) as a precaution. Following on-board medical triage, the majority of passengers were cleared to return home, while three individuals were transported to a hospital for further treatment.

Eurowings stated that the exact cause of the illness is under investigation, though there is a suspicion of a Norovirus outbreak contracted prior to the flight. The aircraft has been grounded in Düsseldorf for thorough sanitization in accordance with international hygiene standards.
