Eurowings flight passengers fall ill on route from Rhodes to Düsseldorf
On Sunday, October 18, multiple passengers on Eurowings flight EW9631, traveling from Rhodes to Düsseldorf, experienced sudden and severe gastrointestinal symptoms. The aircraft, carrying 212 passengers and seven crew members, requested priority landing due to the medical emergency.
Upon arrival at Düsseldorf Airport around 10:00 PM, a large-scale emergency response was triggered. Authorities issued a MANV alarm—a precautionary measure for mass casualty incidents—resulting in at least ten ambulances and various emergency vehicles being deployed. Rescuers wearing protective equipment boarded the plane to assist those affected.
Three passengers were taken to the hospital for medical evaluation. While some passengers reported seeing crew members wearing masks due to the sudden onset of illness, the airline stated that the exact cause of the symptoms remains unknown and is currently under investigation. The majority of the passengers were able to continue their journeys, and airport operations remained unaffected.
