Eurozone economic growth slows as France enters contraction

Eurozone private-sector activity slowed to a four-month low in October, according to S&P Global flash PMI data. The composite index fell to 51.9 from 53.1 in September, missing market forecasts. While the region remains in expansionary territory, growth momentum has cooled across both the services and manufacturing sectors.

France acted as a significant drag on the bloc's performance, with its composite PMI slipping into contraction at 48.4. This decline follows a brief period of growth in September and is attributed to political instability, financial strain, and social unrest. Both French manufacturing and services sectors reported contractions.

In contrast, Germany's composite PMI remained in expansion at 52.8, though it slowed from September's 53.8. The broader eurozone slowdown is being driven by rising input costs, specifically in energy, fuel, and transport, which has pressured profit margins and contributed to persistent inflationary concerns.
