France faces rising debt concerns and bond yield volatility

The eurozone is facing renewed concerns regarding sovereign debt sustainability, with markets increasingly discriminating between member states. France has become a primary focal point for investors due to its high debt levels and political uncertainty. French public debt has surpassed 3.6 trillion euros, representing approximately 115% to 119% of its GDP, while the current year's deficit is projected at 5.4%.

This fiscal situation has caused French 10-year bond yields to approach 5%, with the spread between French OATs and German Bunds reaching between 140 and 152 basis points. This volatility is compounded by political fragmentation ahead of upcoming elections, where candidates like Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon present varying views on European integration and fiscal policy.

Across the eurozone, debt-to-GDP ratios remain highly heterogeneous. While Germany maintains a ratio below 65%, other nations face significant burdens: Greece stands at approximately 146%, Italy is between 137% and 139%, and Spain is around 100% to 102%. The aggregate eurozone debt-to-GDP ratio was estimated at 87% to 89% in late 2025 and early 2026.
