Eurozone industrial production falls for third consecutive month
Eurozone industrial production declined by 0.5% in August, marking the third consecutive monthly drop following declines of 0.3% in July and 0.1% in June. Data from Eurostat indicates that output is 1.1% lower than the previous year.
Sector performance was mixed. Non-durable consumer goods saw a significant decrease of 2.7%, while intermediate goods fell by 0.8% and energy by 0.6%. Conversely, capital goods and durable consumer goods recorded slight increases of 0.4% and 0.2%, respectively.
National results varied significantly across the region. Belgium experienced the sharpest monthly decline at 5.1%, followed by Ireland at 3.1% and Portugal at 2.0%. In contrast, Sweden saw the largest increase of 6.5%, followed by Estonia at 4.3% and the Netherlands at 2.6%. Among major economies, Germany's output rose by 0.4%, while France fell by 0.3% and Italy declined by 1.3%.
Separately, inflation in the euro area and the European Union rose to 3.8% in September, up from 3.2% in August. This increase, driven largely by energy costs, has led to projections from the International Monetary Fund that the European Central Bank may need to implement further interest rate hikes to return inflation to its 2% target.
