Moldovan farmers to protest in Fălești over tax and import concerns
Farmers in the Fălești district of Moldova are scheduled to hold a protest on Monday, September 28, 2026, using agricultural machinery. Organized by the „Forța Fermierilor” Association, the demonstration is set to begin at 09:00 near the exit of Fălești toward Sculeni.
The protesters have presented three primary demands to the authorities: maintaining the 8% VAT rate for cereals and oilseeds, extending the import licensing mechanism for cereals and sunflower seeds until at least December 31, 2026, and the reimbursement of excise duties on diesel purchased between June 1 and December 1, 2026. Farmers warned that rising input costs and insufficient state support could lead to a significant reduction in cultivated cereal areas.
In response to recent unrest, including a protest in Basarabeasca, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Eugeniu Osmochescu stated that the sector is not in crisis. He noted that authorities are currently evaluating whether to maintain the 8% VAT rate or increase it to 12%.
