Eurozone inflation rises to 3.8% amid energy price surge
Inflation in the eurozone rose to 3.8% in September 2026, up from 3.2% in August, according to European Central Bank estimates. Energy costs were the primary driver of this increase, with energy prices surging 18.9% in September following volatility in the global gas market and disruptions in liquefied natural gas production linked to conflicts in the Middle East.
Regional economic trends show significant divergence. In Hungary, inflation has dropped sharply to 1.6%, down from previous highs of nearly 26%, aided by currency stability and government measures. Conversely, Romania saw inflation rise to 6.6% in September, driven by an 11% increase in service costs and significant hikes in fuel prices.
Experts note that Europe's energy dependency makes it particularly vulnerable to international price fluctuations. This volatility impacts various sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, and food production, as companies pass increased operational costs to consumers, further straining the cost of living.
