Eusi Kwayana memorial services begin in Atlanta and Guyana

Memorial observances have begun for Guyanese Pan-Africanist and political figure Eusi Kwayana, following his death at age 101 in Atlanta on October 10. Commemorations include ‘Nine Night’ traditions and a multi-city program spanning from Georgia to Guyana.

Kwayana was a co-founder of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) alongside Dr. Walter Rodney and helped establish the People’s Progressive Party with Dr. Cheddi Jagan in the late 1940s. His political career included serving as Guyana’s Minister of Communication and Works in 1953 and being elected to the National Assembly in 1985. In addition to his political activism, he was an educator, author, and playwright.

A dedicated legacy website, EusiKwayanaLegacy.com, is scheduled to launch on October 20 to honor his life and work.
