Euthanasia and the right to a dignified death under debate
Discussions regarding euthanasia and the right to a dignified death are gaining momentum through community events and legislative advocacy. In Rivas, Madrid, the local Social Welfare Department and the association Derecho a Morir Dignamente (DMD) are organizing a seminar on October 15 to educate citizens on the current application of euthanasia laws and the importance of living wills.
Simultaneously, activists from the Coalición Ciudadana Muerte digna ¡Ya! are promoting the ‘Ley Trasciende’. This initiative seeks to decriminalize and regulate euthanasia and medically assisted suicide. Advocates emphasize that the right to decide on the end of life is a matter of personal autonomy and democratic justice, intended to prevent unnecessary suffering when medical treatments are exhausted. They argue that such decisions are not impulsive but result from long-term medical struggles, requiring patients to be fully informed and supported without coercion.
