EV adoption in India: Financial breakeven factors

As electric vehicles (EVs) become more competitive in India, the financial feasibility of switching from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric models is improving. For consumers considering models like the VinFast VF 6 and VF 7, factors such as ownership incentives, free charging offers, and ICE-to-EV switching support can accelerate the breakeven point.

The time required to recover the higher initial purchase price of an EV depends on several variables, including annual mileage, energy costs, taxes, and the duration of vehicle ownership. For example, a driver covering 20,000 kilometres annually and utilizing home charging may recover the extra cost within a few years. Conversely, a driver covering only 8,000 kilometres per year, particularly without home charging access, may take nearly a decade to reach the same financial equilibrium.

In terms of operational costs, petrol-powered SUVs in Delhi may cost approximately INR 7.3 to 7.8 per kilometre. In contrast, the raw energy cost for an EV, based on local electricity tariffs, ranges from roughly INR 0.4 to INR 1.5 per kilometre.
