EV battery health: Experts and Elon Musk advise limiting charge to 80%
Research and industry experts suggest that electric vehicle (EV) battery degradation is driven more by usage habits than by fast charging itself. Data from Geotab, covering 22,700 vehicles, shows that vehicles relying primarily on fast charging (over 12% of charging sessions) experience an average annual battery decay of 2.5%, compared to 1.5% for those using slow charging. Extreme use, such as repeated full-power supercharging, can increase annual decay to 3.0%.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also advised owners to avoid charging batteries to 100% for daily use. He explained that charging the final 20% of a battery takes nearly as long as the initial 80% because lithium ions must search for available spaces within the battery, similar to finding a parking spot in a crowded lot. Stopping at 80% can significantly reduce charging time and is beneficial for long-term battery health.
Key factors that accelerate battery wear include charging at extreme temperatures (very high or very low), charging immediately after exposure to intense heat, and leaving batteries at extremely low or high states of charge for long periods. Maintaining a charge between 20% and 80% and avoiding extreme temperature charging are recommended practices to extend battery life.
