EV battery industry races to break ten-minute charging barrier
The electric vehicle industry is currently focused on a race to break the ten-minute barrier for charging batteries from 10% to 80% capacity. Companies such as CATL and Sunwoda are developing high-speed chemistries to address range anxiety and match the refueling experience of gasoline vehicles.
However, some analysts suggest that the obsession with ultra-fast charging may misread consumer behavior. While engineering breakthroughs are making nine-minute charges possible, human factors such as the need for bathroom breaks, stretching, or checking phones often mean that charging times already blend into the natural duration of a stop. Current 800-volt architecture systems can already charge to 80% in approximately 18 minutes, which may be sufficient for most drivers.
