EV industry faces quality risks amid rapid model expansion
The electric vehicle (EV) industry is experiencing rapid expansion and intense competition. In China, over 600 new models were introduced throughout 2026, averaging nearly three new models per day. However, this accelerated pace has raised significant concerns regarding vehicle and battery quality.
Robin Zeng, Chairman of CATL, warned at the World Power Battery Conference 2026 that shortening research and validation periods to meet market pressure could lead to fatal quality issues in mass-produced batteries. While lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cell prices have dropped below 0.35 yuan per Wh, experts suggest that inadequate testing durations are a more critical risk than cost alone.
In the consumer market, manufacturers are simultaneously working to balance affordability with performance. Models such as the Wuling BinguoEV and BYD Dolphin are being positioned to offer longer driving ranges—up to 410 km and 490 km respectively—at more competitive price points to address consumer range anxiety.
