EV markets expand in Indonesia and Malaysia led by BYD and Proton
The electric vehicle (EV) markets in Indonesia and Malaysia are experiencing significant shifts. In Indonesia, New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sales reached over 110,000 units between January and August 2026. BYD has emerged as a major player, securing a 37 percent market share with over 40,600 wholesale units, driven largely by the Atto 1 and M6 DM models. Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales in Indonesia more than doubled in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year.
In Malaysia, the EV segment saw a notable rise, with monthly registrations reaching 8,833 units in August, representing an 11.4 percent market penetration. Proton’s e.MAS brand led this growth, capturing a 54 percent market share. While Tesla overtook BYD to take the second position in August, non-national passenger vehicle sales overall saw a 6.6 percent decline. Meanwhile, Proton’s total registrations rose by 18.4 percent month-on-month, narrowing the gap with Perodua.
