President Petr Pavel faces criticism over election absence

Czech President Petr Pavel is facing significant political criticism for his decision to skip upcoming communal elections due to a private motorcycle trip to Morocco. The President's office acknowledged the absence as a “planning error,” noting that he will be abroad until October 19. This marks a rare instance of a Czech president missing an election.

First Lady Eva Pavlová has defended her husband by criticizing the current electoral system on social media, arguing that the state should allow for more flexible voting, such as from abroad or other locations. However, officials, including Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar, have rejected this stance, stating that the essence of communal elections is voting within one's specific municipality and that the current legal framework—which the President himself signed—was followed.

The controversy has drawn sharp rebukes from both government and opposition politicians, who argue that the President is failing to lead by example after previously emphasizing the importance of voter turnout. The situation has also sparked debate regarding the accessibility of voting for citizens who are temporarily away from their permanent residences.
