Evaggelia Liakouli condemns normalization of wildfire deaths in Greece

Greek MP Evaggelia Liakouli, chair of the Justice, Institutions and Transparency committee for PASOK KINAL, warned that the loss of five frontline responders – three firefighters and two aerial‑unit operators – in recent wildfires cannot be treated as "normality". She stressed that wildfires are not extinguished in summer but must be prevented during winter, and called for decisive action to address structural gaps in emergency response.

Liakouli highlighted the extensive damage caused by the fires, noting that ash and destruction have spread from Attica to Argolis, Crete, Kefalonia, Arta and dozens of other areas, with more than 110,000 hectares turned to ash. She urged the government to move beyond rhetoric and implement concrete measures to protect lives, property, agriculture and the environment.

The MP’s remarks came amid growing public grief over the deaths of the five first‑line workers and mounting criticism of the state’s preparedness for the recurring fire season.
