E‑Vai to end private car‑sharing service in Milan by September 2026

The electric car‑sharing operator E‑Vai announced that its service for private users and commuters in Milan will cease in September 2026, ending a 15‑year operation. The decision, taken by the company owned by the Lombardy region through FNM, is attributed to rising energy and fuel costs that made the business model unsustainable. The fleet of more than 300 electric vehicles, previously available to the public for trips of up to five passengers, will be retained only for corporate customers, public administrations and university campuses.

The closure affects daily commuters who relied on E‑Vai to bridge the gap between railway stations and homes. Only one free‑floating operator, Free2Move, will remain in the city’s private car‑sharing market. Industry groups such as Assosharing have called for a dedicated regulatory framework for car‑sharing, seeking clear rules, zoning exemptions and fair cost allocation.

E‑Vai will continue to operate a limited service for businesses and institutions, focusing on preset routes such as workplace‑to‑station trips, while the broader public will need to seek alternative mobility options.
