Evalista Chisale appointed Malawi Deputy Inspector General of Police

The Malawi Police Service Commission has appointed Commissioner Evalista Mvula Chisale as the Deputy Inspector General of Police responsible for Administration. The appointment has drawn significant scrutiny due to Chisale’s personal connections and ongoing legal challenges. She is married to Norman Chisale, the Deputy Minister of Homeland Security and personal bodyguard to President Peter Mutharika.

Chisale’s promotion occurs while she is facing legal proceedings regarding the 2019 death of Buleya Lule. A High Court judge ruled that Chisale, along with nine other officers, has a case to answer following reports that Lule was electrocuted while in police custody.

In a separate move, the Commission also appointed Dr. Noel Kayira as Deputy Inspector General responsible for Operations, following the retirement of Stain Chaima.
