Evan Bouchard aims to simplify defensive play for Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton Oilers defenceman Evan Bouchard intends to simplify his defensive approach this season following off-season criticism regarding costly miscues. While Bouchard led all NHL defencemen in scoring last season with 21 goals and 95 points, he has faced scrutiny from fans and media concerning his defensive reliability.

During training camp, Bouchard stated his primary focus is “keeping the puck out of the net” and making simpler plays rather than attempting high-risk “home run” plays. He expressed confidence that this shift toward defensive stability will not diminish his elite offensive capabilities.

New head coach Mike Babcock noted that Bouchard is “open, honest, straightforward and easy to talk to,” suggesting the player is receptive to coaching and adjustments as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
