Evan Gershkovich reflects on 16-month Russian imprisonment

American journalist Evan Gershkovich, a correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, has spoken out following his release from a Russian prison after 16 months of detention. Gershkovich, who was arrested in March 2023 on espionage charges, was freed as part of a major prisoner exchange involving the United States and Germany, described as one of the largest between Russia and the West since the Cold War.

Gershkovich stated that his imprisonment did not “break” him, noting that one eventually adapts to such circumstances. In accounts regarding his detention, he suggests that the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) may have staged evidence to justify his arrest to President Vladimir Putin. Gershkovich claims that during a private discussion, Putin reacted with anger to questions regarding the ease of the arrest, reportedly slamming a table and calling the reporter an “idiot” because he was “much too obvious.”

The journalist detailed the circumstances of his arrest at a steakhouse, where he was reportedly taken by masked agents and subjected to questioning and physical abuse. His experiences are expected to be further detailed in a forthcoming book.
