Evander Holyfield defeats Mike Tyson to win WBA heavyweight title

On November 9, 1996, Evander Holyfield defeated Mike Tyson via an 11th-round technical knockout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas to claim the WBA heavyweight title. Despite being a significant underdog with odds as high as 25-1, Holyfield overcame skepticism regarding his physical condition following a previous heart diagnosis.

Tyson entered the bout following a series of rapid knockout victories against opponents such as Peter McNeeley and Frank Bruno. However, Holyfield neutralized Tyson’s intimidation tactics by refusing to retreat. By utilizing a disciplined strategy of clinching, using a jab, and punishing Tyson with short inside punches, Holyfield denied the champion the space required to generate power, ultimately breaking Tyson’s psychological and physical momentum.
