Konstantinos Firinidis jailed in NGO charity fraud scandal

Konstantinos Firinidis, the founder of the NGO “Paidiki Chara” (Childhood Joy), has been ordered into pretrial detention by a Thessaloniki judge. He faces charges of embezzling approximately 2.9 million euros collected through charitable donations intended for families with sick children.

During his interrogation, Firinidis expressed remorse, claiming his actions were driven by a severe addiction to online gambling. He admitted to placing up to 30 bets daily and argued that the actual amount not distributed to beneficiaries was between 400,000 and 600,000 euros, rather than the 2.9 million euros cited in the indictment. He denied living a luxurious lifestyle, though he admitted to a sense of megalomania and a desire to appear socially superior.

His partner, Vasiliki Manisioti, was previously detained. She has denied the charges as described, alleging that the missing funds do not exceed 900,000 euros and shifting responsibility to Firinidis, whom she claims spent the money on gambling. Investigations revealed that the couple allegedly targeted vulnerable families directly within pediatric oncology hospitals, using emotional manipulation to solicit donations.

Public figure Evangelia Moumouri has also spoken out, stating she was among those defrauded after donating to a specific cause through the NGO. Authorities have frozen the assets of the primary suspects as investigations continue into large-scale betting transactions and funds identified in Luxembourg.
