Evangelical Alliance in Germany adopts paper on faith and politics
The Convention of the Evangelical Alliance in Germany has adopted a new position paper addressing the relationship between faith and politics. The network, which comprises approximately 900 local alliances and 380 ministries, aims to advocate for justice and the common good while maintaining political neutrality.
The document emphasizes the protection of religious and conscientious freedom, minority rights, protection from violence, the sanctity of life, and the preservation of creation. It also highlights the importance of the rule of law and social participation. The Alliance explicitly rejects the use of religion for political dominance, stating that Christians should not misuse faith to achieve political goals.
To manage internal tensions, the paper encourages members to represent differing convictions fairly and to engage in dialogue without contempt or dehumanization. It calls for the verification of facts and sources and provides guidance for congregations on how to handle political disagreements. The Alliance also committed to opposing antisemitism, political extremism, and racism.
