Evangelical Church in Bavaria adapts to pastors pursuing self-employment

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria is adopting a more open stance toward clergy members pursuing self-employment or external professional projects. Stefan Reimers, the church's personnel manager, stated that the institution views these external experiences—ranging from management and consulting to business and social transformation—as valuable impulses rather than competition to pastoral duties.

Clergy members may apply for self-employed side jobs or take multi-year leaves of absence for personal projects and businesses. However, these activities must remain compatible with church interests and must not conflict with their primary pastoral responsibilities. For those holding full-time positions, side activities are subject to specific weekly hour limitations.

Individual motivations for seeking independence vary. Some clergy members transition into roles such as consultants, authors, or business managers to seek autonomy and apply diverse skill sets outside of traditional pastoral care and community leadership.
