Evangelical Church in Kaarst to consolidate into single location
The Evangelical Church in Kaarst has announced a decision to consolidate its locations. Starting in 2035, the church will operate from a single central location at Lindenplatz in Holzbüttgen.
This decision means the church will abandon two other sites: the Auferstehungskirche in Kaarst and the Johanneskirche in Büttgen. The move has met with criticism, particularly from the Büttgen community. Pastor Annette Marianne Begemann noted that while there is grief regarding the loss of long-standing sites used for baptisms and weddings, the consolidation offers a chance to develop the church's presence in a more central and accessible way.
A concept committee is scheduled to begin work in early 2027 to determine whether the future site will be a new build or an adaptation of existing structures. The church has also resolved to ensure that community work continues to have a presence in all districts beyond 2035.
