Evangelical groups in Brazil employ diverse political strategies

Evangelical denominations in Brazil are employing diverse political strategies to increase representation in upcoming elections. In São Paulo, the Assembleia de Deus do Brás and the Igreja do Evangelho Quadrangular are coordinating efforts to double their number of representatives in the Chamber of Deputies and the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo. Both groups are running candidates under the PL banner. The Assembleia de Deus do Brás is utilizing a regionalized voting strategy, splitting candidates between the capital/Greater São Paulo area and the interior to maximize seat counts.

In contrast, the political landscape also shows growth in evangelical leaders aligned with left-wing parties. Gilmar Machado, a former mayor of Uberlândia and candidate for the PT in Minas Gerais, represents this trend. Machado, who has a background in the Baptist tradition, focuses on public policy and social rights, highlighting the ideological diversity within the Brazilian evangelical electorate.
