Evangelisch-theologischer Fakultätentag reforms pastoral studies
The Evangelisch-theologischer Fakultätentag has approved a new framework study regulation to reform pastoral studies in Germany. Following a meeting in Jena, the decision allows for the transition from the traditional Magister Theologiae degree to the Bachelor-Master system.
This reform aims to provide greater flexibility for students. Under the new system, those wishing to change their academic focus can complete their studies early with a Bachelor's degree, providing an ‘exit option’ that was previously unavailable. Andreas Müller, a theology professor from Kiel and chairman of the faculty assembly, stated that the change is intended to lower barriers for prospective students and increase mobility toward other programs, such as teaching.
The decision follows years of debate between proponents of the Bologna Reform and those favoring traditional Magister and Diploma degrees. Moving forward, universities and regional churches will have the autonomy to decide how to structure their specific study regulations and examinations.
