Evangelistria Neas Ionias marks centenary of refugee community
Commemorative events are underway in Volos to mark the centenary of the founding of the Evangelistria Neas Ionias refugee parish (1926–1926). The celebrations include the presence of the Holy Relics of Saint Photini of Samaria, which were transported from the Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos to the temple.
In addition to religious services, a major exhibition titled ‘Evangelistria Neas Ionias Volos: A Century of History, Faith, and Contribution’ has opened at the Volos City Museum. The exhibition uses photographic and archival materials to document the journey of the community established by refugees from Asia Minor and its evolution alongside Neas Ionia.
Metropolitan Ignatios of Demetrias and Archimandrite Amfilochios Miltos emphasized that the parish serves as a landmark of cultural memory, social solidarity, and education, aiming to preserve the heritage of the refugee community for future generations.
