Evangelos Venizelos reflects on Athens' political history

Speaking at the ‘Dialogues for Athens’ conference, Evangelos Venizelos described Athens as a site of political history and reflection. He noted that landmarks are not merely physical structures but are deeply connected to social and political trajectories, extending even into the digital and cyberspace realms.

Venizelos reflected on the period of the second memorandum, citing the Greek Parliament and Syntagma Square as landmarks shaped by intense political debate and social conflict. He recalled specific incidents from that era, including a lawmaker throwing a bill during a speech and his own interactions with Alexis Tsipras.

Regarding the economic crisis, Venizelos stated that he accepted the responsibility and the public's anger to avoid the risk of economic, social, and democratic collapse. He criticized the promises made by SYRIZA at the time, characterizing them as both ‘impossible and false’.
