Evanston/Skokie School District 65 proposes closing two elementary schools

Administrators for Evanston/Skokie School District 65 have proposed the closure of Dewey and Lincolnwood elementary schools as part of a larger effort to reduce spending by $20 million by fiscal year 2028. The district estimates these specific closures would save approximately $2.9 million.

Lincolnwood Elementary was identified for closure due to a 33% decline in enrollment within its feeder pattern over the last decade and high maintenance costs. Most Lincolnwood students would be moved to Willard Elementary School. Dewey Elementary was also proposed for closure due to declining enrollment in its feeder pattern and limited facilities compared to other district buildings.

Local families have expressed significant opposition to the plan. Parents cited concerns regarding the loss of community, the impact on working families who rely on the school's location for public transit, and the potential disruption of specialized programs, such as the Two-Way Spanish/English Immersion program.
