Evening Diet and Hormonal Balance Affect Sleep Quality

Consuming a dinner high in simple sugars and refined flour can cause a rapid rise and subsequent drop in blood glucose, triggering a stress response that releases cortisol and adrenaline at night. Elevated cortisol keeps the nervous system alert, interfering with the natural decline of melatonin and making it harder to fall and stay asleep.

Stable blood‑sugar levels are better maintained by moderate amounts of complex carbohydrates such as whole‑grain rice, oats, barley or sweet potatoes. These foods promote a modest insulin release that facilitates tryptophan entry into the brain, supporting melatonin production and a calmer hormonal profile.

Waking up at the same time each night, often around the third hour of sleep, is frequently linked to the normal architecture of sleep cycles. When a person goes to bed at a consistent time, the transition points between light and deep sleep repeat at similar intervals, making micro‑awakenings predictable. Stress or hormonal imbalances can prolong these awakenings, turning a routine physiological event into a disruptive experience.
