Everest: The Other Side documentary chronicles extreme mountaineering and grief

Oscar-winning filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin have released a new documentary, ‘Everest: The Other Side’. The film follows elite ski mountaineers Jim Morrison and Hilaree Nelson as they attempt to summit Mount Everest via the dangerous North Face and ski down the descent.

The documentary explores the profound personal tragedies intertwined with the expedition. It captures the 2022 death of Hilaree Nelson in an avalanche during a separate Nepalese expedition, as well as Jim Morrison’s personal struggle with the loss of his wife and children in a plane crash. The film examines the emotional resilience required to pursue extreme physical goals while navigating intense grief.

A special screening was recently held in New York City, attended by the creative team and various notable figures. The film is produced by National Geographic Documentary Films, Walt Disney Studios, and Little Monster Films, and is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical and IMAX release on October 30.
