Everett and Community Transit discuss potential agency merger

Officials and community members in Everett recently met at an open house to discuss a potential merger between Everett Transit and Community Transit. The proposed consolidation, which has been studied for several years, would involve Community Transit absorbing Everett Transit, causing the latter to cease operations.

While a merger could lead to increased service frequency and the addition of up to five new bus routes within the city, it would likely result in a sales tax increase for residents. Currently, Everett Transit operates with a 0.6% sales tax, whereas Community Transit charges 1.2%.

Both the Community Transit board of directors and the Everett City Council are expected to consider voting on an interlocal agreement as early as October. A draft consolidation plan is expected to be made public in September.

Separately, Community Transit is marking its 50th anniversary. To celebrate, the agency is hosting a “Community Transit Day” at the Evergreen State Fair on August 30, featuring a museum bus named Bluebell and commemorative items.
