Everglades conservationists launch new lawsuit and water rescue movement

Conservation groups in Florida are intensifying legal and community efforts to protect the Everglades ecosystem. Friends of the Everglades and its partners have filed an updated lawsuit in U.S. District Court to demand accountability regarding a facility known as ‘Alligator Alcatraz.’ The plaintiffs allege that government officials withheld critical information, including evidence that Florida applied for federal funding for the detention center, which could have required federal environmental reviews.

Simultaneously, the ‘Rescue the River of Grass’ movement is gaining momentum. This community-driven initiative, supported by the Florida Oceanographic Society, advocates for policymakers to prioritize land acquisition in the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) for water storage and manmade marshes. The movement aims to mitigate devastating algae blooms in the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon by ensuring sustainable water management and environmental protection.
