Everglades wildlife combats invasive Burmese pythons

In Florida’s Everglades, invasive Burmese pythons—originally introduced through the pet trade—have significantly disrupted the local ecosystem. Research indicates these snakes have caused drastic declines in native mammal populations, including a 99.3% decrease in raccoon sightings and a 94% decrease in white-tailed deer observations following their spread.

However, recent studies reveal that native predators are beginning to combat the invasive species. Researchers tracking young pythons discovered that American alligators, water moccasins, and certain mammals are preying on them. Notably, a bobcat was recorded killing an adult python approximately 3 meters long.

In a documented instance from June 2021, a bobcat was observed attacking a python nest, ultimately destroying 42 eggs. This represents one of the first documented cases of a native animal targeting python eggs, providing new insights into how local wildlife may respond to invasive species.
