EverWind to hold open houses for proposed Point Tupper data centre

EverWind has announced two community open houses to discuss a proposed $10-billion data centre project in Point Tupper. The sessions, scheduled for November 3 in D’Escousse and November 4 in Richmond, aim to allow residents to meet the project team and review details regarding the two-phased development.

The project is expected to utilize 420 megawatts of power and up to 500,000 litres of water per day from Landrie Lake at full buildout. The proposal has sparked significant local debate concerning environmental impacts, electricity and water demands, and economic benefits. Public protests are planned for November 7, and an online petition related to the project has gathered over 23,000 signatures.

While Premier Tim Houston previously stated the province was not actively pursuing data centres, his stance shifted in September to indicate openness to discussions. Concerns have also been raised regarding the potential tenants of such facilities, specifically citing warnings from AI company Anthropic about the risks associated with rapid artificial intelligence development.
