EVG union threatens German rail strikes over staff violence
The railway union EVG has threatened nationwide security strikes in January if the German government does not act to increase penalties for violence against railway staff. This threat follows a rise in attacks, with the Federal Police recording 3,200 violent incidents against railway employees in 2025, averaging more than eight attacks per day.
In response to the increasing danger, the Federal Ministry of Transport is preparing a draft to amend the Criminal Code. The proposed changes aim to increase minimum prison sentences for attacks on emergency responders, medical professionals, and railway staff. Under the new draft, minimum sentences could rise from three months to six months, with a minimum of one year for group attacks or treacherous ambushes. The government intends to pass this legislation through the Bundestag within the current year.
EVG leader Martin Burkert stated that the current situation is untreatable. The union is increasing pressure by signaling that works councils may refuse to approve January rosters for DB Regio and private regional operators like Averio, which could lead to significant service disruptions in regional rail transport.
