Evi Simeoni, veteran German sports journalist, dies

Evi Simeoni (born 1958) died in July 2026, ending a career that spanned more than four decades in German sports journalism. She began at the Stuttgarter Zeitung before joining the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in 1981, where she served as editor, deputy head of the sports department and reporter. Simeoni covered Olympic Games, world and European championships, and specialised in international sport policy, anti‑doping issues and equestrian sport.

She was twice named "Sportjournalistin des Jahres" and received the Theodor‑Wolff‑Preis, the Fair‑Play‑Preis im Sportjournalismus, the Silberne Pferd, and in 2022 the German Riding Cross in Silver at the Stuttgart German Masters. Colleagues, including Dr. Dennis Peiler of Pferdesport Deutschland, praised her rigorous, independent reporting and her contributions to horse‑sport coverage. Simeoni also authored several books, notably collaborating with Olympic dressage champion Isabell Werth on "Vier Beine tragen meine Seele".
