Evia's Former Mining Pits Transform into Scenic Lakes

Abandoned open‑pit magnesite (magnetite) mines in North Evia, Greece, filled with groundwater after mining ceased, creating roughly twelve turquoise lakes. These water bodies have developed into small ecosystems supporting reeds, plane trees, amphibians, turtles, fish and many bird species, illustrating nature’s regeneration in a former industrial landscape.

The lakes now attract hikers, photographers and drone operators. Local authorities are evaluating gentle tourism initiatives—trails, viewpoints and educational programmes—while integrating the sites into a broader plan to showcase the region’s mining heritage and promote geotourism and environmental education without compromising their natural character.
