EVN to modernize Rosenburg hydroelectric power plant

The energy provider EVN has announced the start of modernization works at the Rosenburg hydroelectric power plant in the Horn district of Lower Austria. The project, scheduled to begin in September, aims to upgrade existing infrastructure while improving the ecological state of the Kamp River.

The modernization includes renewing the power plant building and technical equipment, as well as repairing the dam wall. Through the installation of new turbines and modern control technology, the plant's capacity is expected to increase from 0.9 megawatts to approximately 1.4 megawatts. Annual electricity production is projected to rise from four to five gigawatt-hours, which should supply roughly 1,500 households.

The project follows a compromise brokered by environmental lawyer Tom Hansmann and local nature conservation groups. This agreement led EVN to pivot from previous expansion plans toward this facility renovation to avoid prolonged legal disputes. Ecological measures include increasing the water volume flowing around the bypass island and transporting approximately 1,800 cubic meters of gravel upstream. Construction on the dam and historical building is slated to begin in summer 2027, with full commissioning expected by autumn 2028.
