Evo Morales faces investigation for 2009 Hotel Las Américas case

Bolivia’s Prosecutor General, Armando Urioste, has launched a preliminary investigation into former president Evo Morales and former vice-president Álvaro García Linera. The probe concerns a 2009 police operation at the Hotel Las Américas in Santa Cruz, which resulted in the deaths of three foreign nationals: Eduardo Rózsa Flores, Michael Dwyer, and Árpád Magyarosi.

The investigation follows an accusatory proposition filed by opposition legislators Tomasa Yarhui and Rodrigo Antonio. The charges include murder, torture, mistreatment, and unlawful deprivation of liberty. The case has gained international attention after the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights concluded in 2021 that the Bolivian state had committed human rights violations during the incident.

Morales’s legal team has called for impartiality and independence from the current government, arguing that the 2009 operation was a constitutional measure intended to prevent separatist movements. Morales has stated he intends to personally defend himself against the allegations. The Prosecutor General’s office is currently in the phase of gathering evidence to determine if a formal trial of responsibilities should proceed through the Supreme Court of Justice.
