Evo Morales faces criminal accusation over 2009 Hotel Las Américas case
The opposition alliance Libre has filed a formal accusation against former Bolivian President Evo Morales and former Vice President Álvaro García Linera before the Attorney General's Office. The proposal seeks to initiate a trial of responsibilities regarding the 2009 Hotel Las Américas incident in Santa Cruz.
The accusation alleges crimes against humanity, including summary executions, illegal detentions, and torture. The legal filing cites evidence from press reports and findings from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), which previously determined that human rights violations occurred during the police operation. The 2009 raid resulted in the deaths of three individuals: Eduardo Rozsa, Arpad Magyarosi, and Michael Dwyer.
If the Prosecutor's Office accepts the accusation, the case will move to the Legislative Assembly. A two-thirds majority vote in the legislature is required to proceed with a trial before the Supreme Court of Bolivia.
