Evolution Metals expands magnet production amid rare earth supply tensions

As the United States seeks to reduce its dependence on Chinese rare earth supplies, companies like Evolution Metals & Technologies Corp. are expanding magnet production to provide alternatives for electric vehicles, industrial equipment, and defense applications. Evolution Metals has appointed former defense officials, including retired Air Force General Thomas A. Bussiere and former acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller, to its board to align with U.S. security interests.

Geopolitical tensions have intensified as China utilizes export controls and blacklists against U.S. companies in response to American efforts to build independent supply chains. Recent data shows a decline in rare earth magnet shipments from China to the U.S., with August shipments falling 20% from July.

While reports surfaced regarding China Rare Earth Group’s interest in acquiring Shenghe Resources—a company holding a 3% stake in MP Materials—Shenghe has denied these plans, and MP Materials maintains that neither the Chinese government nor Shenghe controls its operations.
