Evolution of Agentic AI architectures and memory systems
The development of agentic AI is transitioning from ad hoc prompting toward structured execution frameworks known as agentic harnesses. These architectures have evolved through three primary paradigms: Chains, which offer low latency for linear tasks but are prone to cascading failures; Graphs, which provide operational control through nodes and edges for complex branching; and Code harnesses, which utilize sandboxed environments to provide deterministic and verifiable outputs.
Complementing these architectural shifts is the emergence of unified memory systems, such as the Bio.md standard. This approach aims to solve the fragmentation of agent identity and context by consolidating identity, skills, long-term memory, and runtime state into a single, self-updating Markdown file. Designed to be language-agnostic and compatible with local models like Ollama, this method allows agents to maintain a persistent sense of self through a continuous ‘heartbeat’ of user interactions.
