Evolutionary shifts and extinction risks impact animal species

Recent paleontological and conservation studies highlight the dramatic shifts in animal evolution and the current threat of extinction. Research into prehistoric ancestors reveals that animal size is not permanent, having fluctuated over millions of years due to factors like oxygen levels and climate. For example, during the Carboniferous period, high atmospheric oxygen allowed invertebrates to reach massive proportions.

A study of European fossil records suggests that the rise of modern carnivore ancestors, such as the predecessors of cats and dogs, was driven more by climate shifts than direct competition with rival predators like hyaenodonts.
