Evolutionary studies reveal new insights into human ancestors

New scientific findings regarding hominid evolution have emerged from studies in Kenya and Ivory Coast. In Kenya, researchers analyzed 1.4-million-year-old fossilized footprints belonging to Paranthropus boisei. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), reveals that these extinct human relatives were larger than previously thought, potentially reaching 1.80 meters in height and weighing approximately 75 kilograms. The evidence suggests these individuals were males moving in a group, indicating a complex social structure.

Separately, a study published in PNAS by researchers from Ohio State University examined black-tailed mangabeys in Ivory Coast. By observing how these monkeys climb vertical trunks, scientists gained insights into how the last common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees might have moved through forests. The research demonstrated that mangabeys use significant mid-foot flexion to climb, providing a new anatomical perspective on primate locomotion and evolutionary history.
