Evonik Starts Production of AEM Membranes for Green Hydrogen

Evonik Industries has begun industrial-scale production of anion exchange membranes (AEM) for electrolyzers at its Marl site in Germany. The pilot line is designed to supply membranes capable of supporting more than 2.5 GW of electrolyzer capacity per year, aiming to reduce the cost of green hydrogen by using metal‑free materials and eliminating additional compression steps.

The company is also testing the membranes under industrial conditions at a technology centre in Shanghai. By lowering membrane costs, Evonik hopes to make green hydrogen more competitive with grey hydrogen and support its use in renewable‑energy systems and industrial applications such as steelmaking. The announcement triggered a modest movement in Evonik’s shares on the XETRA exchange.
